Toto is an American rock band that formed in Los Angeles in 1976, known for a musical style that combines elements of rock music, especially progressive rock, hard rock, pop, soul, funk, R& B and jazz, which makes them highly appreciated by the public. In more than 35 years of career they have released 28 albums and sold a total of more than 40 million records.

The complex was formed in Los Angeles in 1976.

The initial lineup included: Band members had previously collaborated with notable artists such as Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, Boz Scaggs, Sonny & Cher and many others, appearing on many of the albums most famous of the seventies. Keyboardist David Paich was also known for producing and writing the latter’s album Silk Degrees with Boz Scaggs. David Paich and drummer Jeff Porcaro had already played together on several occasions, and in 1976 they began to seriously discuss the possibility of creating their own complex.

The project involved bassist David Hungate

Who had already played with them along with Boz Scaggs, young guitarist Steve Lukather, Jeff’s brother Steve Porcaro on keyboards and synthesizers, and Louisiana-born singer Bobby Kimball? In 1977 the Toto ensemble signed a contract with CBS (Columbia Records) and began work on the first album. The choice of the name of the band comes from drummer Jeff Porcaro, who at the time of recording the first demos had just seen the movie The Wizard of Oz, in which Dorothy’s dog, the protagonist of the movie, is called “Toto”.

Toto, therefore, was used by Jeff Porcaro to personalize

The first demo tapes recorded in the studio. Only later did the name become definitive: it was David Hungate, bassist of the complex, who pointed out that in Latin the word 토토사이트 means “total”, “Which includes everything”. Toto was thus considered the ideal name to identify the musical repertoire of the band that in its career would cover all genres at 360 degrees. In September 1978, the ensemble debuted with the album of the same name, containing the single Hold the Line, which quickly climbed the charts. The band received international acclaim and was nominated for a Grammy Award in the “Best New Artist” category.

The Hold the Line single was followed by it’ll Supply the Love,

Shortly thereafter, in early 1979, the El Toto ensemble began their first US tour in support of their debut album. At the end of Toto’s tour, the group began work on the next album, titled Hydra, which was released in late 1979. The album included the single 99, inspired by the George Lucas film The Man Who Fled from the Future. (THX 1138). Despite the popularity of the song, in 2007 Steve Lukather admitted that 99 is the Toto song he loves the least; for this reason, for several live performances the song was not performed again and later returned on the 2013 35th anniversary tour in an acoustic version. Hydra also released the singles “St. George and the Dragon” and “all US Boys”, as well as a video for the song “Hydra”, although the single was never released. Hydra did not achieve the same commercial success as Toto, but it was still a gold record in the United States.
